How does your organization use the "fund is restricted" box?

If your organization uses the "fund is restricted" checkbox on the Fund record, how do you define "restricted"?

  • We use the definition of Unrestricted, Temporarily Restricted or Permanently Restricted.  So, with the exception of the Unrestricted Fund, all of our funds have the Restricted check box marked.  Your finance department/controller can probably help you determine how best to use this checkbox at your organization.
  • Yes, any fund that doesn't feed your general operating fund is likely restricted (though that's not necessarily true - we're a big organization and there are a few exceptions for us). But basically, a restricted fund is typically set up to pay for a specific expense that is outside of your budgeted expenses. For example, if your organization needs to buy a new bus to facilitate field trips and that's outside of your regular annual expenses, you would set up a fund specifically for the bus.

But yeah, talk to your accounting person/people. Every org does things a little differently.
