Net Community On or Off the whole way?

Options
We have Net Community up and running for about a 2 yrs and at the time of deployment we kept users away from logging in and using those features (update info, see gift history, etc) The only feature we are scared of using Or not sure of is allowing donors to see their gift history, i.e., they may not make that second gift if they see they did already early that year, or they may fear the security of the having that info out on the net etc. My question is if you have the feature turned on, what made you decide to do it and what is if any feedback from the donors? OR if you have it off what made you decide not to turn it on and was there a specific problem? Any input would be greatly appreciated, thanks.

  • Our director has issues with this too. I've spent a lot of time cleaning up data, but historically, things are not as tight as they are now. She is also concerned that people will be deterred from giving to a site they gave to log in to. I think that is really a generation gap, but I'm not in charge.
  • We let out alumni login. It's really valuable to us at in enables alumni to serve themselves. In 2012 we had 5000+ profile updates that alumni made themselves via our login portal.

I think you can guard against poor data by acknowledging uncertainty in the way you communicate. For example:

'According to our records you email address is ..... If this is wrong, please let us know!'

Like you, I'm most concerned about the gift history functionality. I think alumni/donors will obviously be most worried about poor data in the financial area. For this reason we haven't reployed the feature so far.

I suppose you could set up a role of people whose dat you're most confident about. You could then expose the giving history to only that role.
  • Our DOD feels strongly that we should NOT use the gift history as we make specific, targeted asks to each alumna/us. Though we don't have any data to prove it, he feels that the gift history would not help us increase our gift amounts and may actually do the opposite.

We do use the profile update and online directories with great success. We also implemented a public "quick" update form using a common form on our alumni landing page, www.shipleyschool.org/alumni. This form is used often and thought it doesn't flow to RE it does help us get updated info.
