Prospect Research and Data Analyst


Reports To: Director of Advancement Services



Position Summary:

The position of Prospect Research and Data Analyst is integral to the success of The Lovett School’s

development program. The incumbent is responsible for all aspects of qualitative and quantitative data and

trend analysis, prospect research, and development office metrics. The primary responsibilities are to

identify and evaluate prospects, build prospect pools for identified priorities, analyze and forecast behavior

through benchmarking, modeling, and analytics, and assist the Leadership Giving Manager and Chief

Development Officer in the proper management of prospect portfolios for key fundraising programs

including major, annual, and planned giving.



The Prospect Research and Data Analyst will facilitate this process from the employment of data mining,

predictive modeling, forecasting, and statistical analysis techniques, to identification of criteria and

development of rating systems. The incumbent will work closely with the Leadership Giving Manager on

the evaluation, management and oversight of prospect pipelines and strategy, from producing lists for staff

and volunteers, to providing focused research reports on individual prospects. The workload of the position

is restricted to that assigned by the Director of Advancement Services and Chief Development Officer and

the hours for this position are 8:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Monday through Thursday (4:00 p.m. on Friday)

during the regular school year. When school is not in session, the hours are 8:30 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. (3:30

p.m. on Friday).



Essential and Related Functions:



Prospect Information Duties
  • Manage the collection, analysis, and interpretation of internal and external data to identify,benchmark, and screen top prospects/new donors, corporations, and foundations for major giving, planned giving, and leadership annual giving strategies. Work with Leadership Giving Manager and Chief Development Officer to assign identified prospects based on strong understanding of department goals and objectives.
  • Collaborate with major giving staff to determine donors’ areas of philanthropic interest and identify potential avenues for engagement.
  • Establish research methodologies and data gathering formats to identify potential prospects for relevant initiatives or campaign priorities.
  • Build, evaluate, and manage prospect pipelines to meet the needs of the school. Collect and analyze relevant information on corporations, foundations, and individuals, as appropriate for their stage in the development cycle.
  • Work with the Leadership Giving Manager to respond to internal prospect research inquiries and present information in a variety of written formats including reports, summaries, and abstracts.
  • Manage data entry and data integrity activities associated with prospect tracking and portfolio management information.
Prospect Qualification Duties
  • Implement a comprehensive business analytics program, models, and reports to support shortand long-term planning including giving trend analyses, behavior patterns, statistical modeling, custom analysis, and data-driven intelligence.
  • Devise new data-driven approaches to portfolio analysis and create a portfolio management strategy.
  • Develop and employ recognized prospect research procedures utilizing electronic screening results (e.g. Blackbaud Wealthpoint) to help identify, classify, prequalify, and cultivate prospects/suspects capable of making philanthropic contributions to The Lovett School.
  • Organize and conduct screening sessions with many constituencies of the school including school leadership, alumni association leadership, board members, volunteer groups, development staff and others who can help identify, cultivate, and solicit gifts.
  • Interpret SEC documents, corporate press releases, real estate records, private company data, philanthropic interests and other indicators to assess viability, solicitation timing and potential capacity and code appropriately in the Prospect Management and Tracking System.
  • Provide financial analysis and assessment of program effectiveness.
Office Operations Duties
  • Create and produce ongoing development metrics and benchmarking reports for key development leadership, the Headmaster’s Office, and volunteer committees including, but not limited to, the Advancement Committee of the board.
  • Remain abreast of evolving technologies to collect and research prospects. Recommend research information sources and other tools for subscription renewal, new purchase, or additional free web sources.
  • Perform maintenance of the research files in the Office of Development.
  • Perform other duties as assigned by Director of Advancement Services or Chief Development Officer.
Position Requirements:
  • Bachelor’s degree required.
  • Minimum of two years of demonstrated experience in prospect research/prospect management, development, or information field, including at least one year of experience analyzing and synthesizing data sets and producing highly readable, informative reports and presentations required.
  • Preference given to candidates with understanding of and competency with the Association of Professional Researchers for Advancement (APRA) skill sets – specifically in prospect research and research management.
  • Must have working knowledge and experience with relational database software (preferably Blackbaud Raiser’s Edge) and electronic database screening (preferably Blackbaud Target Analytics).
  • Must have substantive knowledge of prospect research skills and experience in the use of electronic prospect screening information, online resources, and subscription services.
  • Proficiency with statistical data analysis software.
  • Exceptional analytical skills and the ability to organize and synthesize essential information and to present information in highly usable forms and on a timely basis.
  • Ability to create and implement effective tracking systems.
  • Knowledge of non-profit fundraising, preferably in a complex environment within an independent school or higher education organization.
  • Flexibility to manage multiple tasks and ability to prioritize and work with a high degree of independence.
  • Ability to work with fundraisers with a positive attitude and proactive approach.
  • Must possess strong computer and Microsoft Office skills, and advanced spreadsheet expertise.Knowledge and experience within a Mac environment also preferred.
  • Strong ethical sense to handle confidential and sensitive information appropriately.
