How is the First_Time_Donor field populated?

There's a field in Luminate's Donation by Transaction Report called "FIRST_TIME_DONOR" - for each donation it's either a YES or a NO. I assume it's meant to identify if a donation is a donor's first gift in Luminate.



Does anyone have background on how that field is populated? I noticed there's a number of people in the system with gifts on file, none of which have a "YES" for this field - which doesn't seem like it should be possible, but I might be missing something!
