Track NPOs

Options
Hello,

We are looking for a way to track NPO's in RE.

The ideas we have come up with are as follows:

Option 1:

Create a Constituent Code for NPO

Use Bio 2 "Industry" to list the type of NPO (education, healthcare, etc.)

Option 2:

Use Industry tab on Bio 2 as NPO

Use Attributes tab to further segment type of NPO

Under category would be education, healthcare, arts etc.

Is anyone else tracking NPO's in the database and if so can you share how that is done?

Thanks!

  • It sounds like you are talking about how to classify NonProfit Organizations.  A constituent code sounds like the best way, but you may want to consider backing off of the "NPO" code and throw the net a little wider.  I've seen CBO (Community Based Organization) used before, which is where NPO's would fall.  But it also leaves you open to code other orgs whether one knows their NP status or not.  Just a thought, though you may have a need to verify that the org is a Non Profit, and then you would want to be more specific instead of general with your ConsCode.

    Best!

  • I would also suggest a constituent code.  You can use attrbutes or other areas to drill down if you need to.

One thing that I have seen is that different organizations deal with certain groups more than others.  For instance, at my organization right now, it is important for us that we have codes for "Church" and "Child Care Center".  At another organization, this may not be important to track at all.  So get a sense of what kind of groups you work with and consider using your codes in this way.

Remember, a constituent can be more than one thing.  A church afterschool program is both a church and a child care center for us.  I say this because I have seen organizations that are not properly using Export to get info out of RE (not export from Query) and they have tried to only use one constituent code per record.
