Mail segmentation vs. merged queries when running mailing lists

Options

I recently changed organizations after 10 years and have found something similar in both orgs. My predecessors at both orgs did not use the mail segmentation function ever. All mailing lists have been generated by using multiple merged queries. At my previous organization I started using segmentation as soon as I learned about it as it prevents duplicate mailings (for the most part) and is so much easier. I plan on doing that again at my new organization. I'm just curious if others have had to do this also. And is there any advantage to using merged queries vs. the ease of segmentation?  Thanks!

Good question. I don't use it. I have been merging queries for years.

Robin - We would use segmentation if, for instance, we had over 3 segments so it got hard to manage with merged queries. I find that the merged queries have more 'visibility' when you're trying to figure out what you did vs. segmentation which is somewhat 'hidden' in the Mail function? If you keep good notes/records as to how you produced a specific mailing, then that might be less of an issue -- but if you're just looking about trying to figure out which queries were used for mailings I'm not so sure ....
