Error Occurred During Merge Process

Options
Hello, We merge records quit often and ran across an interesting situation for the first time. When merging the message states, "An error occurred during the merge process. The merge could not be performed. This transaction is not the current transaction and is not editable." The error message occurs when it comes to time to merge the gift, all other fields seems to be ok. Any ideas or suggestions to tackle this would be very helpful. Thanks in advance! Best Regards, Amanda

    Hi, Amanda!

This error may appear when one of the constituents being merged has a gift of membership on their record.  To resolve this, you can do the following:

    1. Break the link between the gift of membership and the membership record (Step-by-step instructions regarding how to accomplish this can be found at https://www.blackbaud.com/kb/index?page=content&id=BB122454)

    2. Merge the two constituent records

    3. Re-link the gift of membership back to the membership record (https://www.blackbaud.com/kb/index?page=content&id=BB43522)

    Thanks :)

I've run across the same problem. The KB article describing how to break the gift of membership link (https://kb.blackbaud.com/articles/Article/38575) includes this note:

"NOTE: The link for gifts to dropped memberships can not be broken"

So what can be done in this case? I can't break the link to the gift of membership, so this constituent record simply can not be merged with another? There has to be some way around this besides deleting the entire membership from the record.

  • I have a similar problem...once upon a time, we used RE & NetCommunity to do registrations for one of our classes.  The staff at the time didn't worry about duplicate records, so we have a significant number of dupes where the first record has the Event information (a lot of Attributes with details that I don't particularly want to loose, just in case) and then the second record which has the Gift (Registration Payment) and the Event...the problem that prevents merging these two Constituent Records is that the one with all of the Event details (Attributes) is entered as a Guest Of the one with the Gift Record.  Merging requires that you delete the Guest Of record, and thereby all of the Attributes associated with it.

If anyone has an idea I haven't thought of, I'd be very grateful.  It's a lot of Attributes to try Exporting and Importing, but that's I think what needs to happen.  On the back burner, since we don't really use the data currently, but I am hesitant to just delete it...sometimes these folks become donors (one even a Board member) and I'd like to maintain as much data as possible on them.
