Definitions of donor status

I've received this question a few times recently so I thought I'd publish this content to the Community:

 

 

The following are the definitions of the donor status types in Convio:



Non-Donor

- someone who is registered on your site but has never donated money to your organization



Indirect Donor

- Someone who donates to a TeamRaiser participant, not directly to the organization.



Joint Donor

- Someone who has donated with someone else in a joint gift.



Donor

- Someone who has either donated to your site on any occasion, or anyone who has had multiple statuses (i.e. the person has both donated indirectly and jointly).

So is that the only way a donor can change status? To have multiple statuses?

 

It seems there could be other ways.

 

I think there are a few more statuses now, per the API documentation: Never, Undefined, Indirect, Direct, Unknown, Non-donor. It is missing Donor in the list, but I think that is just an oversight.

Can you explain the bolded ones as well?

 

Also, we have an RE database. I have users that have made external gifts, but are still have a status as 'Unknown' in Luminate even though it shows the external gifts on their constituent record. Does Lumiante not consider RE gifts? Are these statuses set only on transactions conducted in Luminate?

If you are querying for donor status, do not forget that external gifts(gifts from Raiser's Edge or another database) that flow into LO, do not change a donor's status. Only gifts that come in through LO will change a donor status. In Query, you can choose fields that start with 'External' to help get the full picture of your donor status'.


Just know that if you using just 'Donor Status' to build a group or do anything, you probably aren't getting the entire picture if you have external gifts.
