Constituency Codes

I am at a small independent school (260 students toddler - 8th grade) and wondering how best to keep track of constituency codes - what do other schools do? For the students I have been entering Current Student, Alumni, or Graduate and entering To/From dates where I know them. The From dates are difficult to obtain from the students that have been here a while. But going forward we should be able to capture that. Is it best to change the constituent code from Current Student to Alumni when they withdraw or is it better to add a new constituent code? How do you all handle parents and grandparents of students? When a student graduates, do you change their code from Current Parent to Graduate Parent with dates? Or do you keep them as parents? I would like to be able to send mailings to graduate parents and alumni parents - could I get at this info from a query on the Graduates and then their relationships? for a mailing to them?
