Merging Letters from RE turns off spell check

I run into the problem over and over when I'm merging acknowledgements through mail in RE.  I'm not sure if it is a RE issue or a Word merge issue.

 When I run the letters, in the Word doc, spell check is basically turned off for the merged sections.  I've gone to MS and found a solution to turn it back on, but I'd like to keep it from getting turned off in the first place.  Many of the errors we get on letters come from manual changes that have a typo that are not getting picked up in a spell check.

 Anyone else have this problem or know of a solution?
