Deferred gift entry in RE

We do not have the planned gift tracker module for Raiser's Edge, but would like suggestions for workaround data entry of deferred gifts in RE, especially irrevocable charitable remainder trusts.  Gift type Other? Pledge? Subtype?

I have the same question. Is anyone tracking planned gifts without the module - in or out of RE?

The options I have seen utilized, depending on how much info you want to capture are these:

Constituent Attribute: Description = Planned Gift... Date... Comments: with any details you may have

    OR

Gift: entered as a Pledge with a payment schedule, depending on the approximate age of the donor dated anywhere from 10 to 30 years out, and because you do not know the amount you can enter the amount as $.01 (one cent) (if you want this info to pull on financial reports it has to have an amount other than zero) and any other info in the Reference field.

    OR

Set up Planned Gift in the Prospect module if you have it.

In general, these folks usually end up on some sort of Legacy/Heritage Society list for publication and invites, that can be a tag in Constit Attributes also.  That way it is an easy/direct way to pull them as a group.

    that's my two cents

We do not use the planned gift module. All our planned giving prospects and confirmed are tracked using attributes. We have not been entering them as pledges simply because we have found that for us, there is too much change. If we felt very confident that it wouldn't change, we would likely enter it as a pledge as well as having the attribute

Thanks - I'm going to look into using the Prospect Tab - and if not, then will try attributes

We have the planned gift module.  I really think that unless you have a huge PG program you can manage without it.  We were doing a major planned giving campaign and purchased the module.

    Pledge with gift subtype

Attribute - either constituent or gift

Membership - part of our program is a "legacy society" with a lifetime membership

Really anywhere - even prospect ratings, notes, or actions - as long as you are consistent and use tables instead of free text as much as possible.

  • Hi Crhistine,

When you mentioned using the prospect tab what feature were you referring to?  I thought you may mean using proposals to capture the planned gift and wanted to check.

FYI,  I asked for a price for the planned gift module last week and found out that we already had it with our NXT subscription and just needed the code to unlock it. I think that it will be very helpful in tracking our planned giving society members who previously have been coded with an attribute.

  • Whaaaaat!  We use NXT as well, thanks for the heads up!
  • I'm considering using pledges and just having a Planned Gifts fund or using Proposals and attaching details about the gift to the proposal or linking the proposal to an action to type up notes on the gift.  Which have you found to be a cleaner approach?

I would suggest either a Pledge with a Gift Subtype or an Action.  If you have the Prospect Module you can put it there as a proposal, with a link to an Action.linked to it.  Your finance department may not like the Pledge idea, especially if you are linked through FE, like many are.
  • Thanks Christine, I spoke with our CFO and he really liked the idea of setting up a separate fund.  So I've done that and typed details in the notes; interestingly enough RE allows me to enter $0 pledges for those that we dont have an amount.
