Summary:

 

The Recording Academy is seeking an Assistant Controller / Director of Accounting.  This person will handle overall general accounting, financial reporting and analysis, forecast and budget preparation and other special project functions for The Recording Academy and NARAS Properties, Inc.  Will also manage accounting staff.

 

Responsibilities Include:

  • Supervise accounting staff.
  • Review and post Accounts Receivable transactions.
  • Reconcile Authorize.net or other credit card processing interface(s).
  • Review Accounts Payable posting for release of checks.
  • Responsible for month-end closing for The Recording Academy and NARAS Properties, Inc. by 7th business day. Review operating, payroll and sweep bank account statements.
  • Prepare and review monthly general ledger account reconciliations.
  • Prepare and review monthly journal entries.
  • Prepare, review and analyze monthly membership revenue reporting and journal entries.
  • Prepare monthly lobbying allocation
  • Prepare, review and analyze monthly financial statements.
  • Prepare fluctuation analysis on overall and departmental financial statements.
  • Design and prepare special reports for Controller, CFO, President/CEO, other management and elected leadership as needed or assigned.
  • Prepare information on financial matters for the Board of Trustees and Audit/Finance Committee.
  • Participate in forecast and budget preparation for Audit/Finance Committee Meetings as well as semi-annual Board of Trustees Meetings.
  • Assist Controller with preparation for annual financial statement audit.
  • Prepare shared operating and salary expense allocations for affiliated companies on a semi-annual basis.
  • Prepare Form 990 for NARAS Properties, Inc.
  • Assist Controller in preparation of Form 990 for The Recording Academy.
  • Develop, implement and communicate accounting policies and procedures.
  • Cross-train accounting staff.
  • Provide Financial Edge and other needed training for Business Affairs accounting staff.
  • Liaison with other departments regarding Financial Edge Dashboard reports.
  • Participate in various events, programs and special projects within companies as needed and assigned.
  • Research for Chief Financial Officer on an ad hoc basis.
  • Meet with senior officials of organization, including President, Chairman of the Board, Secretary/Treasurer and Chief Financial Officer to discuss and strategize the financial goals of the organization.
  • Propose and implement cost-cutting procedures as deemed necessary for all affiliated companies.
  • Prepare all government surveys and census requests.
  • Prepare all Municipal tax filings.
  • Review fixed asset schedules and personal property tax filings.
  • Supervise Accounts Payable staff of three.
  • Supervise Accounts Receivable staff of one.
  • Supervise Senior Accountant.

Qualifications Include:

  • Strong organizational and administrative skills required.
  • Excellent customer service and interpersonal skills required. Ability to interact with all personnel and elected leadership in a professional manner required.
  • Ability to multi-task is essential.
  • Ability to work under pressure of deadlines in a fast-moving environment is required.
  • Ability to remain to calm in high-pressure situations.
  • Attention to detail is a must.
  • Proficiency in computer programs is required. Advanced abilities in Financial Edge, Excel, Word and PowerPoint.  Use of pivot tables and solution solving in Excel is essential.
  • 4 year-degree in Accounting or Finance
  • 6-8 years of work experience in the financial accounting/reporting related fields
  • Non-profit and entertainment industry a plus.
  • Public Accounting experience a plus.
  • CPA or MBA preferred.
  • Strong computation and problem solving skills.
  • Ability to communicate ideas clearly.
  • Solid grammar and punctuation skills.
  • Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of different daily variables.
  • Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, and computer schedule form.
  • Ability to see long-term ramifications of decision making.
