Overview:



Severe malaria is a major cause of childhood death and often the main reason for paediatric hospital admission in sub-Saharan Africa. Quinine is the established treatment of choice, but its primacy in the treatment of severe malaria has been challenged by the introduction of artemisinin derivatives. Studies in Asia and Africa have shown parenteral artesunate substantially reduces mortality in adults and children with severe malaria. Based in Lusaka, the Severe Malaria Associate will work with the Ministry of Health (MOH) National Malaria Control Centre (NMCC) and partners to accelerate the introduction and uptake of artesunate for the treatment of severe malaria. The Severe Malaria Associate will play an integral role in seeing through the introduction, uptake, and monitoring activities relating to the implementation of parenteral artesunatein Zambia, establish best practices in new product introductions, and support the NMCC in other malaria case management initiatives.
