Coding donor preference for e-Receipt

When people donate (NOT online, but by mail or phone) they are asked if they want to receive their tax receipt by email.  If yes, that is noted on the donation form and the processor knows to issue the receipt electronically.

However, we seem to have to ask that question every time-even if they have requested their receipt by email before.  When donations are entered in a batch we are not necessarily going into each record to see this type of information.  As far as we know, there is no way to mark the constituent record as wishing to receive their tax receipt by email and have this pop up when the donation is processed through the Batch application or when receipting through Mail.

How are other organizations dealing with this?  I hate asking a donor the same question over and over again, and them giving me the same answer over and over again.  There has to be a way to retain this information that is then automatically applied to each subsequent gift.  (Sure I can track it in attributes but it has to be tied with gifts in a batch

    You can always create an attribute and query on that attribute for a business rule so you can get a pop-up.
