Merging Multiple Memberships

I inherited a database in which some constituents have multiple membership records. For example, if Joe Smith stopped donating and then rejoined years later, his original membership would have been left as lapsed and then a new membership was added when he rejoined. We are now transitioning to using NetCommunity, where constituents can potentially login to see their own giving and membership histories. Ideally, we would like to implement that feature but we would need to clean up our records before doing so. Is there a good way to merge the memberships for these multi-member people so that they only have one membership record but we don't lose their member history?

Not that I know of -- sadly, rebuilding the membership history manually is the only way I know to clean that up.
