Counting the donor but not the Revenue for Events

Options

We use events to track events and registrants, but we do not count their registrations as revenue, therefore the registration lies on their event tab.    We would like to be able to count the registrant as a donor but not the revenue.

We are debating what to do in order to make this happen, we were going to set up a "dummy fund and link the gift to that" or we were going to add $1.00 from each event to the constituent record.

What is the best practice for this?

Thank you!!

Where (reports?) and what circumstances are you counting them as a donor?  Are you counting them to increase your "number of donors?"  I guess you could just add a zero amount gift that's linked to the event registration, which would then let you check and uncheck the "Exclude zero amount gifts" checkbox on reports as needed.

If you include them and increase your number of "donors" it will also throw off other information, like making your average gift amount lower.  Not sure I would ever consider an attendee at a free event a donor.  Prospect would be a better term to use.

If you don't count the money they are not a donor.

Yes, we are attempting to increase our number of donors.

I understand what you are saying if they do not give $$ they are not a donor.
