The Need IJM's mission depends on its ability to demonstrate outstanding stewardship of financial donations, large and small, and to maintain the highest accounting and finance standards in each of its offices around the world. As Accounting Manager, Grants, you will play a pivotal role in overseeing several international field offices and continuing the track record of strong internal controls and excellent financial reporting, to achieve unqualified audits and consistent compliance. You'll also manage financial reporting for medium and high dollar private grants, participate in requirements definition and implementation of a new global enterprise resource planning system, and gain exceptional experience working with a gifted and dedicated team of professionals. This position is based at IJM Headquarters in the Washington, DC area and reports to the Director of International Finance. Responsibilities Field offices Guide and support assigned IJM field offices' field office directors, accountants and other staff to ensure IJM worldwide finance standards are upheld; Monitor field offices' financial transactions, lead month-end closing process to ensure full and accurate conversion and incorporation of local currency QuickBooks data into current US$ HQ general ledger; Review monthly field office financial reports and sampled transactions for compliance with IJM's Field Office Finance Manual, assuring expenses are properly approved, adequate substantiation has been provided, and project allocations are correctly recorded; Expeditiously resolve all outstanding, unreconciled, uncategorized, or improperly categorized transactions; instruct field offices on adjustments as necessary; Tie field office balance sheets in local currencies to US dollar financial statements; Assist the Director of International Finance and other field office reviewers in formulating, documenting and communicating appropriate field office finance policies; and Assist in interviewing, training and coaching new field office finance staff as needed. Grants Maintain and improve protocols for opening and closing grants, assign grant accounts and codes, communicate grant requirements to other IJM staff, including field offices funded by grants; Monitor and analyze grant expenditures for compliance with grant terms and conditions; Prepare financial reports as required for grants and other special programs; Guide grant budget managers on who should charge grants, analyze cash burn rates, provide pipeline reporting of unspent grant funds; Communicate with grantors as necessary, respond to financial information requests from HQ colleagues and the field; Maintain award files from inception to close; and Perform gift vs. grant analysis and determine appropriate accounting treatment when donor intentions may not be clear. Global Finance Strategy and Systems With Finance department teammates, develop tactics, establish measurable goals and create annual work plans to effect achievement of IJM's 3-5 years plan and 2017 vision, including policy updates, audit/monitoring strategy and improving monthly close process; Consult as needed with advancement teams during proposal development process to optimize terms of successful gifts and grants for maximum mission impact; and Identify field office, grants and other finance requirements for new enterprise resource planning system anticipated to be implemented in the next 1-2 years. Travel Requirements The Accounting Manager, Grants will typically make one to three trips of two weeks each to IJM Field Offices in the developing world every year. Required Skills and Experience Bachelor's Degree in Accounting or the equivalent required; 3-5 years non-profit accounting and grants management experience, preferably for a global organization; Understanding of GAAP and currency conversion methodologies; Proven ability to monitor and manage compliance with grant terms and conditions and to meet grantor reporting requirements; Skill using chart of accounts and project identifiers to allocate and report on diverse funding sources; Proven ability to use general ledger software, Word, Excel, Outlook, web browser and web-based reporting; Effectiveness in training and coaching finance and non-finance staff in internal control policies and procedures to ensure highest standards are maintained; Ability to manage multiple projects and priorities; Flexibility in a multicultural environment; Excellent oral and written communication skills; Proven capacity to accurately and objectively evaluate the effectiveness and outcomes of strategies and activities, and experience in implementing appropriate adjustments; and SharePoint, QuickBooks, Blackbaud's Financial Edge and/or enterprise resource planning system experience a plus.
