facebook connect share link not working

Options

So as far as I can tell my facebook connect is set up properly.

But having just put a share link on a page, the actual sharing part of it is not working:

http://action.sierraclub.org/site/PageNavigator/facebook_connecttest?refresh_fb_connect=1&refresh_fb_connect=1

This first click -- making the connection between facebook and convio works fine. It's just nothing happens once that happens.

Any ideas?

thanks,

Adrian

Mine was working correctly after I set it up and it just stopped working all of the sudden and is having the same issue yours is having. Let me know if you figure it out!

  • So it looks like this is not working because of the recent update to Facebook's connect API. I don't have any confirmation from anyone at Convio on this specific functionality, but querying Convio about facebook stuff in general, we got this reply:

The impact of the recent FB changes is quite drastic. Because FB basically dropped the use of FB Connect and delivered their FB for Websites and Open Graph API, the existing FB Connect functionality integrated with Convio is broken. Repair might not be reasonable because it really requires us to approach this from a different architectural view...

It also seems Convio is working on a new sharing tool that encompasses more than just FB for the summer release.

  • Because of the recent changes that Facebook made to their product strategy regarding the changes to Facebook Connect, Convio has decided to discontinue support for the current Facebook Connect Integration within Convio – effective in the Summer 2010 release.

Instead, we have partnered with Gigya to power our latest Social Sharing and Open Authentication features (available in the Summer 2010 release). These new features are a significant upgrade from the existing Facebook Connect integration in that they provide an efficient way to integrate not only Facebook but Twitter, LinkedIn, MySpace, Yahoo! and other social media; they enable both tell-a-friend and login functionality; and they provide integrated reporting.

Convio is strategically committed to socializing our platform. With this change we have elected to pursue a strategy that allows our clients to connect and participate with MANY social media sites instead of just one.

If you are currently using Facebook Connect on your Convio hosted sites for sharing or site login, please review our new Social Sharing and Open Authentication features (below).

As always please contact the Convio support team if you have questions.

Please review the short FAQ below for more information.

    What Is the Product Impact?

    - The configuration menus for Facebook Connect will be removed from the administrative console.

    - Anywhere a Facebook Connect component has been placed on your site will disappear once you are upgraded to the Summer 2010 release.

    - The Facebook Application Integration remains unaffected at this time.

    - Within the TeamRaiser Participant Center, Social Sharing components will automatically appear by default once Social Sharing is enabled.

Why are Social Sharing / Open Authentication better?

    - Social Sharing allows your users to share to not only Facebook but Twitter, LinkedIn, MySpace, Yahoo!. Social Sharing also includes the existing Tell-A-Friend functionality.

    - Open Authentication allows your users to login using not only Facebook but Twitter, LinkedIn, MySpace, Yahoo!, Google, AOL.

    - Both solutions include integrated reporting.

    - Both solutions are provided via Gigya which allows you to standardize on one Gigya API key instead of having to maintain multiple API keys for each social media site.

Where can I learn more about Gigya, Social Sharing and Open Authentication?

Would this impact Facebook share links that do not use Facebook connect? We have had a huge amount of trouble getting our traditional Facebook sharing language working, and something in the upgrade seems to have broken already existing links in our old thank you pages. Very frustrating.

    Hey Tessa,

It shouldn't. But do you have an example of a page you could share? Happy to take a look.

I just opened a ticket about this but thought I should post here as well. I completed my setup of the Social Sharing piece today. We have configured Facebook, MySpace, and Twitter for our users to share with. Unfortunately, Facebook and MySpace each have issues.

When a user selects Facebook to share the pop-out window appears and allows the user to enter a message. Clicking the Share button you can see activity in the Status bar (it eventually displays "Done") but the pop-out never goes away unless the user refreshes the page. Nothing it posted to Facebook.

With MySpace the user gets an error "Failed connecting. Please try again later".

I have triple check my setting but may have missed something. Any ideas?

    Hey Pierre,

I had a couple problems when I did it.

One with twitter -- I had entered one of the values incorrectly (but you sound like you've checked that).

One with facebook where I had the settings wrong for Publish Wall Updates, and Migrate to Graph API. All of that was on the Gigya side of things.

If none of that works out, Casey Flinn was very helpful in getting things resolved.

    Pierre,

Our support folks are definitely the ones to go to and who will help you resolve things.

When you created your Gigya account:

    - Did you use the link from within the Convio admin interface? or did you just go directly to Gigya?

    - Did you use Gigya's full service offering to create your social networking applications (FB, Twitter, Myspace, etc.), or di you create your own?

    - Did you double check all the required settings as noted in the Configuring Gigya document posted here on the community?

I have found these 3 secnarios as the msot likley culprits. You must use the link from within the Convio admin interface because this passes a sourcecode to Gigya which triggers additionall settings. If you just go to gigya directly to create an account it will not work in Convio. Having Gigya create your social networking applications and get your API keys is jsut great because it ensures they are configured correctly and its less work for you.

Support should have all these same questions for you but just wanted to post something since Adrian said I was so helpful

    Thanks,

    Casey
