New Donation Form w/ Custom HTML+CSS

I have custom html+css I want to use for my donation form. Poring over the docs, I gather that I need to create a shadow form with all the fields I want, and then create something like this example form that submits to it.



Do I have to edit this custom html with the web based page builder editor, or is there a way to use a seperate file, and edit and save it with my favorite text editor? (Similar question asked in 2008, I also am felling encumbered.)

Also, is there a way to generate something like the example form for a form that I create, so that I can start with something that submits properly?

I found this thread from 2008 which seems to indicate that you can use a stand-alone html file for your custom form. How do you deal with errors if doing this?

This is my donation form. It works, but if there is an error, it goes back to what should be the shadow, or ghost form. What is the right way to avoid that?
