Does a "411111111" test create transaction record?

Just setting up my first API donation page and it seems to be working--my test submission returned a donationResponse. But I'm getting null and 0 for the confirmation code and transaction ID, respectively, and there's no transaction record for the submission in the account of the email address I used for the test. I assume this is just how the df_preview setting works but I'd appreciate it if someone could confirm that. Also, assuming it's true, how do I double check that the custom field value I'm passing via the URL (the whole point of the exercise) is actually getting recorded? I think it should have thrown an error if not, but it isn't one of the values that gets returned in donationResponse and seeing is believing.
