Rescinding award offers

Options

Our deadline to accept offers has just passed, and there are MANY students who have not accepted their offers that have balances due for their fall classes! Emails and texts were sent. I would like to know what other colleges do in this instance? Do you reach out again? Do you rescind? Thanks for your input!

  • @Evelyn Payne we don't rescind offers for non-acceptance we would still post to the student account regardless. We get about a 60-70% acceptance rate on scholarship offers in AW. Doesn't really answer your question. Interested to see if anyone has ideas on this topic though

  • We retain them for fall quarter to see if the students are actually attending our school, and if they are attending a final attempt is made to contact them (now that they're presumably being forced to at least occasionally check their email). No response after quarter 1 = dropped scholarship. If they call the office next quarter asking why their scholarship was dropped they have to fill out an appeal form to get their scholarship back, explaining to the donor why they were unable to complete the earlier acceptance tasks. Sometimes we just have bad contact info ?‍♀️ ultimately we want to give out scholarship dollars and get thank you notes so this process allows us to be a bit forgiving. Rescinding a scholarship in Q2 has a surprising effect on a students ability to find an email = P

  • @Evelyn Payne we do an email blast to the students and parents to both their school account and personal account. Once the parent sees our email the responses start pouring in. We do not include any details regarding the amount of the offer or the named scholarship as we do a large bcc email, we do include our scholarship email, office phone number, office hours, location and zoom calendar for appointments for anyone needing assistance to accept their offer. We send this reminder email the day after our due date (because the student does receive many reminders before) Once the parent sees that the date has passed and we're giving one last chance it creates a sense of urgency. Anyone who does not respond we have an admin calling both parent number and student number to see if the student is still planning to attend, if we can assist with anything, and to let them know they're offer is about to expire. We do share that their offer will be given to someone else if they do not need the scholarship or accept their offer. We give a grace period for students who respond. If still no response then we do rescind the offer and select someone else. We have one fulltime and one part-time awarding a million dollars. One is constantly awarding, the other is constantly doing follow up.

  • @Evelyn Payne
for me personally, i update their offers. their offer letter has their deadline date to accept and what they have to do for their post accept (thank you notes for donor and student bio) and i set communication for reminders for post accept/offers to be sent. if they accept their offer but do not submit post accept, i send them reminders once a week if possible, up until the deadline, once i have the deadline passed, i send them an email notification their scholarship was rescinded due to not submitting post accept (thank you notes for donor and student bio) even if they accepted their offer.
