Virtual Scholarship Workshops

Options
Hello Everyone!

Has anyone held any virtual scholarship workshops for their students during COVID-19?  If yes, what are your procedures?  In my face to face workshops, students would drop in to work on or complete their application and could ask me any questions regarding the application process - clarification on questions, how to upload transcripts, help on their statement. Sometimes students ask private questions and Zoom exposes students to sharing information with others they may not want to.  Any ideas or brainstorming welcome!

Thank you,

  • I host workshops that are more general in nature: go over the How Tos and step by step instructions to the group as a whole.  I find that covers about 95% of everyone's questions.  But anyone with personal concerns/information or want me to review their applications I encourage them to schedule a one on one meeting with me.
  • I would be interested in being invited into these.

    Thank you

  • Our Financial Aid department hosts workshops that cover how to complete the General Application, how to look for specific opportunities, etc.  Various departments also host workshops, and we refer people to the Online Writing Lab (OWL) for help writing essays.  In Zoom, students can post private questions to the host, if you have that feature enabled.  Our school uses Cranium Cafe for counseling and many of the student services, so confidential, one on one assistance is available.
  • I agree with Stacy Bazman, I'd also be interested in viewing your workshops.

    Thank you, Deborah
  • I too would like to be included in the workshops.

  • It sounds like we are in need of a practice Scholarship Zoom Session :o)

Deirdre Coburn and Amy Bosler - Would either of you be willing to lead us through one of your workshops in a 30 minute session?

I know that for myself, it would be extremely helpful in assisting students during these difficult times.

    Thank you!

  • Sure, if you'd like.  I say I'm an expert but I did it ?

Amy - happy to tag team with you for this as two perspectives are better than one.
  • Deirdre,

How often do you host workshops?  Are participants required to register for the workshops? I'd be interested in joining the practice Zoom session as well.  Thanks!

  • Hi Leronica,

I hold in-person workshops on major national scholarship applications in the fall term ~2 months before the submission deadlines.  This is the first year I've done these workshops virtually and I will say the nice thing about it is I can do each workshop once and have a recording available rather than doing a couple of workshops per scholarship application.

Our BBAM application cycle opens for the 2021/22 academic year in January and this will be the first year I do a virtual workshop on that as well and tbh, I'm excited to do it as it will be a big help for students to boost applications completed and the quality of the applications.
  • I would love to be included too.

  • Will you please invite me as well or let me know how to access a recording of your workshop?

  • Hey Everyone,

Wow, there is a good level of interest in this idea!

Amy and I are setting up a chat for us to figure out what to present to you and then we can figure out when - I suspect sometime in mid-December (guessing off the top of my head).  We'll post it here once we have a solid date/time.

    Stay safe everyone!

    Deirdre
  • Deirdre and Amy,

Thank you for setting this up!  You two are amazing!

Can't wait to learn how to have a successful scholarship workshop during this weird time.

    Stay safe,

    Ivena
  • I do presentations but would be interested in viewing workshops.

  • Hi Everyone,

Time has flown by and Amy Bosler‍  and I are still keen to do a workshop on virtual presentations but it looks like it won't happen until the New Year.  Sorry about that.  In the meantime, I hope everyone has a safe and happy holiday break.?

    Deirdre
  • Thank you so very much for keeping this on your radar.  I just have a conversation with my VC about this.  Thanks again!
  • Ivena,

In collaboration with a professor, we used Blackboard Collaborate for a virtual scholarship workshop. Students could follow along with the PowerPoint presentations then ask questions afterward.

  • Hi Everyone,

I just wanted to share quick (and slightly rough) How to video we created for our students: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yLJF2lRE39s&feature=emb_title

The video was created before our scholarships opened and were visible, so we'll need to refine it with better screenshots, now that our Spring cycle is open.

    Thanks,

    Amy
  • I know folks were asking for a little "how to" and Amy and I chatted about it but I'm afraid time got away from us and we still haven't done anything. Sorry ☹ about that, we didn't ignore you. Thank you Amy for sharing your video.

Basically, I just do a step by step demo while sharing my screen with the audience. You can do a zoom webinar and record it. You just have to remember to read out questions from the chat. Once recorded you can post it wherever your students can access it.
