Power BI Data Refresh and Publish

Options

Hello, I use PowerAutomate to update my data sources, which are in SharePoint. I set-up scheduled refreshes on the semantic version of my dashboard, which I have published to a team workspace. I am receiving email notifications that the refresh is failing for this reason: Your data gateway (personal mode) is offline or could not be reached. Ensure the gateway computer is on and you are logged on to it during the scheduled refresh period.

Will the refresh only work if my computer is not shut down? Is there another way to ensure the dashboard stays updated?

if your power bi data source is in sharepoint, but getting a gateway error, then the likely problem is the way you “source” the data.

You probably have OneDrive installed where SharePoint files are “sync” to your computer. When you setup the power BI to get data, were you using SharePoint or Excel file and then select the file from your computer's Onedrive?

  • @Molly Glowacki Yes, your computer needs to be on in the current way you have it set up based on that error.

Check out my post here about how to avoid this which as @Alex Wong points out is a difference in the way you “Source” your data.

  • @Dan Snyder thank you for sharing!

  • @Alex Wong thanks Alex! This was essentially my issue. Although I had published to a shared workspace, I had embedded the desktop version in my SKY API app. On top of that my Power Automate flow was refreshing the desktop version and not the shared workspace. Lots of small issues. Explaining here in case anyone else finds this!
