Power BI 101?

Options

I haven't used Power BI yet--I usually just stumble through a new tool until I get the hang of it, and probably pick up bad habits. Has anyone seen a really great “getting started with Power BI” document/video?

  • Thanks so much, @Dan Snyder ! I'm excited to dig in.

  • Not that I am the only expert here, but feel free to reach out if you have questions.

  • Hi Dan. We have gone through and set up the connector and from Get data we can see the Navigator with the list of options, including constituents and gifts. The challenge we have is that the list of fields available, particularly for gifts is limited and we are looking for other fields like Appeal ID, Appeal Description, Package ID and others. Do you know whether it is possible to access additional dat through the connector? Any other ideas how to get the info into Power BI?

  • @Andrew Wilks I responded to part of your question on another thread about getting the Appeal and Package data. I should also mention that all of the reports that I have created in Power BI use Excel/CSV files as the data source. I do this because I am able to limit and combine some data pieces (like appeal id and description) or fiscal year giving totals easier than I can with the connector. I am able to schedule a refresh of that data which I have not been able to do using the connector.

I am not saying it is not possible to schedule a refresh with the connector cause I have not really looked into it that much nor so I really have any knowledge in that end of Power BI, but it was much easier for me to set up a personal gateway for refreshing reports and I will soon be moving all our data to where our IT department hosts their Power BI data so it will not be dependent on my computer being on and connected to the internet for the reports to refresh.
