Description
The Director of Marketing and Public Relations develops and actualizes public relations and marketing strategies designed to promote awareness and increase support of the mission and vision of Huston-Tillotson University. The successful candidate will be responsible for planning, implementing and monitoring ongoing strategic marketing, public relations, and communication programs that increase engagement by targeted local, national, and international communities in the life and activities of the University.
Responsibilities
- Reporting to the Vice President for Institutional Advancement, develop, execute and continuously improve strategic plans for marketing, communications and public relations that promote the University to meet its mission
- Achieve established metrics for the writing and placement of feature news stories and press releases about the programs and accomplishments of the University
- Supervise the Special Events Manager and provide oversight to the University’s events management process
- Collaborate with the print and electronic editors of the Central Texas and other targeted print media to secure regular coverage for the University
- Serve as the University’s primary contact with the print and electronic media
- Work with Campus Safety and Facilities Management to produce and maintain the University’s Emergency Preparedness /Crisis Management Plan
- Coordinate appropriate and timely responses to all media inquiries about the University and the University’s response to breaking news
- Receive and escort all media personnel while they are on the campus
- Oversee the editing and publication of all official campus publications
- Work closely the Office of Institutional Advancement to support marketing and communications needs related to fundraising and Alumni Relations
- Collaborate with the Office of Enrollment Management to enhance student recruitment efforts and media components that promote new students and scholarship recipients
- Collaborate with the Office of Information Technology and other key stakeholders to continuously update the University’s web site and other social media sites
- Collaborate with the Intercollegiate Athletics Department, the Director of Student Affairs, and other appropriate departments regarding student and athletic-related events, including video production components
- Inform campus groups and key stakeholders about community events and ensure the University’s representation as appropriate
- Work closely with the President/CEO and the Vice President for Institutional Advancement on special assignments to advance the University
- Bachelor’s degree in journalism, communication, and/or marketing required;
- Three years marketing/communications experience, preferably in higher education.
- Experience managing or leading in public relations for a large organization or institution of higher education
- A minimum of three years of management experience
- Proficiency in word processing, data entry, and other computer skills
- Excellent interpersonal, grammar, and communication skills in oral and written presentation
Preferred qualifications:
- Master’s degree in a related discipline preferred.
- Proficient with Microsoft Word, Microsoft Publisher, Power Point and the Adobe Suite preferred
- Experience utilizing customer relationship management or fundraising software such as Raiser’s Edge
- Graphic and Web design
- Familiarity with historically black colleges and universities preferred
- Experience planning special events preferred
