Event Types best practices/suggestions

Options
We are just getting started using the Events module, and I'm wondering how other organizations use the Event Types field. We have some internal disagreements about whether this should be as general as we can go (Sporting event, Dinner) or specific (Men's Basketball/Football, Chancellor's Tour/Scholarship Event). What does your organization's Event Type table look like? How did you go about deciding what you were going to use? How do you use these categories for reporting, if at all?

Thanks!

  • Good question! We're just getting started and I've been wondering the same thing. I'm considering a general approach and I've listed some of my ideas below. For reference, we're a school with 3 campuses. ?
    • Fundraiser - Galas, golf tournaments, etc.
    • Community - Grandparents Day, Muffins with Mom, Back-to-School Picnic
    • Seminar - Half-day or full-day trainings that we invite parents and other schools to attend.
    • Alumni - Alumni Day, Homecoming, etc.
I thought about reporting and I think this method will work for us. I'll want to see how much revenue per year our events bring in, so I put them all in one category. If I want to look at event engagement or funds raised based on the department organizing the event (Athletics, PTA, District), the coordinator field allows me to do that. I'm curious about the event types other people use as well. What did you settle on?

    Thanks,

  • Tara - I wish I could say we've decided anything at all! We've been so busy with other things that we still haven't fully implemented the Events module, thus I haven't really had to come to any decisions yet. I am also leaning towards general, though. I guess I'll just have to make a decision and stick with it. :)
