Industry Tab Category Cleanup

Basically, I am newish to the place I am working and have started alot of RE cleanup attributes, solicit codes, etc. and am now on people's business records, specifically the industry tables. 
It's a mess with alot of duplication or industries that are very close to each other and I was wondering if someone has a best practice for how many/what should be the main 50, 75, 100 industries to include, or how your organization decided on the categories that are present?  Any feedback would be greatly appreciated!
