Hi, i have a query and hope you may be able to share your experience. Do you link or embarded files in media tab, or both? Which way do you think is best?

We used to link (what we were told to do in our original RE training). Then we found out that we shouldn't do that because if you change the location of the file, the link will no longer work. So now we embed.

I believe, if you are hosted, you must embed your files (in case that's relevant to you!).

As John just posted, there are other threads out there about this. Short answer: Embed. If you ever plan to move to NXT, you will have to be Hosted, and Hosting requires Embedded Media. If you plan to move to NXT, Media becomes Attachments, and it's drag-and-drop simple to Attach. Plus, some day (soon, I hope), you'll be able to add Attachments to other types of records, like Gifts.

I keep a backup copy on our network drive (because we started out Linking before we moved to Hosting & NXT and we're in a holding pattern right now to be able to start Attaching to Gifts, etc.).

Jennifer - For what it's worth, we already add attachments to our gifts. We just do it in the Miscellaneous tab by creating a new note. I upload files of checks, thank you letters, etc. and attach them to the gift.

Now, if NXT has a better a way for uploading and attaching files in gifts, that would be great!

How do you add an attachment to a Note? I don't know of any way to do this, nor have I heard anyone ever mention this capability before.

Hi Jennifer, I would also be interested in knowing how you do this. I just tried today with no success. It appears you can only upload a .rtf or .txt version both of these formats do not render usable documents.
