How do I handle a donation made to the wrong organization?

Options
I work at a museum and we have a BBNC site. There is an outside potitical committee that is raising money in support of a ballot iniative that would benefit our museum. We feel that there might be some people who get confused and make a donation on our site, when they are really meaning to make it to the political action committee.

We are trying to figure out how to handle a situation like this if it happens. If we can identify a donation as being earmarked for the committee would we delete the transaction and refund the money? We don't want to have any record that the donation was mistakingly made to us.

  • By no means am I an expert here ...

But, I think you may want to keep record of the transaction.

    a) because you will have credit card fees on both ends of the transaction (receive and refund)

    b) if these folks are interested in supporting you (even just politically), might you want to be aware of them? I would think it might be a good group to communicate with (granted, we use our Raiser's Edge for some of these other non-donor activities and you may not)
