Using multiple BBMS swipers at an event

Options
In the past, staff used 1-2 credit card swipers (on smart phones) at our golf event for auction purchases, which worked fine. This year the committee wants to use swipers at the holes and around the course for challenges, raffle, etc. Board members would be in charge of the swipers and would use their own smart phones. Has anyone organized an event using the BBMS swipers this way? How did it go? What were your challenges and successes?

  • We have done this at our golf event.  As far as I know, the only problem has been no cell service on certain parts of the course (so the swipers can't connect).

  • You would need to authorize each device and later de-authorize.  That and possible lack of cell service are the major areas of concern.  But if the users are comfortable, then I don't think I would be concerned with much else. You'd have to buy a bunch of extra swipers, but if you plan to re-use them and you recoup the money then the cost shouldn't be an issue.
  • I don't believe our IT department would ever allow that kind of information-sensitive interface due to the minimal security present on smartphones. You would have to be sure to de-authorize immediately after the event, to prevent potential data breaches from integration with non-company software.

Thanks for your feedback! Blackbaud MobilePay doesn't store credit card data on the phone or tablet. In addition, if you want to prevent your nonprofit board members or volunteers from accessing the app after an event, we recommend creating a unique security code, username, and password for each device. Following the event, access can immediately be suspended by device from within the Blackbaud Merchant Services Web Portal.
