Creating a new Query

Options
Good morning,

This is my first time requesting help.  I'm a fairly new user of RE and what I'm trying to accomplish is creating a new Query.  I need to come up with a Query that shows Sponsers no specific timeline.  I always have problems with coming up with the correct Criteria.  Can someone help lead me in the right direction.

Thank you

  • Hi Renee,

You may find you get more responses if you post this in the Query category, rather than in General Discussions cool

Are you doing an event query or a constituent query? Participant type (e.g. registrant/guest/sponsor) is located under the Event Participations node in a constituent query, and is under the Participants node in an event query.
  • Without knowing exactly what you mean by "sponsor," it's hard to answer this. But here's the rule of thumb: imagine what things make the constituent records you're looking for unique. What subset of parameters would they have that no other subset would have? Then query for those things. This advice might seem obvious, but it's the basic starting place I arrive at every time I'm trying to pull together a new query.
  • How is a Sponsor indicated in RE?
  • Thank you for replying.  Much appreciatedlaugh  I guess it's all hit or miss.
  • Not sure if this will help, but in my database, I can see if someone is a sponsor by their constituency code - so in that case, I would run a Constituent Query, using the criteria of Constituent Code equals Sponsor.

So, find the thing that in your database makes a sponsor unique: maybe it's the constituent code, maybe its the fund they gave to, or perhaps that they are the only files with a certain solicitor.

    Good luck!

  • Oops, just realized someone already posted pretty much what I did. Sorry!

Renee, very little in RE is hit or miss.

Providing you a helpful response requires more info from you though.  What does your terminology "Sponsors" refering to?  A fund? A Constituent Code?  It could mean 100 different things to a 100 users.  Many of us would be willing to provide advice but need more info to head you in the right direction.
  • When learning to build Queries (and even now after 10+ years), sometimes I will open the Consitutent record and ask myself, "What from this record do I want to Query on?" Then I add those parameters to my Query. So for instance if I'm looking for people who currently live in my state, I see that the state is in the Address section of the record. Then I go to Address - Preferred Address and select "State" in the Criteria tab.

Also, don't be afraid to click around in queries. You don't have to save them in case you "mess up."
  • Renee - I'm enclosing our basic procedure from our manual on Creating Queries - perhaps it will provide some practical introductory information to help you along.
  • Gina, that's very impressive!!!
