How do I assign keywords so that a page is searchable? For example, I have a page that is about an event. If someone went to my homepage, how can I make it so that if they enter the name of the event in the search box on my homepage?

If you go to the page properties you can add Metadata description and Metadata keywords.

If you are using the BBNC search or quick search you should know that they do not search all part types and do NOT search metadata description or keywords. The quick search and search tools only search Formatted Text and Images, Formatted Text and Images (Secured), Discussion Group, Event Calendar, Job Board, and Weblogs.
