Tax Receipting in Canada - receipt numbers

To those working in Canadian organizations ... when receipting consolidated gifts, I have heard that some people use a whole separate numbering system than one-off gifts. What do you do?

 We continue along with our same numbering system, though the number of times we have re-ordered receipts and set a new start number in RE is kind of boggling to me. We used to be quite concerned that all of the same year receipts stay within a certain range, but that was just silliness. As long as one receipt number is assigned to one donor/gift with no duplication and you're keeping adequate copies (electronic or hard-copy), there is no need for such convoluted messes.
