What's the optimal graphic file size for uploading virtual badges?

Options

Can anyone suggest optimal file size for uploading virtual badges? We did not have great results last year following the recommended size in the documentation, and we actually turned off the feature for displaying the small 16 x 16 pixel badges in the honor roll becuase of their visual appearance. But I recall someone did a great job of implementing this for both personal pages and the honor rolls -- anyone have any ideas?

  • We use 48x48 PNGs for our fundraising milestone badges. I created an html document to show our entire collection a few weeks back.

Our hospital uses animal icons for each floor, and so I adopted those for our fundraising achievements. The hand icon is our logo, so I use variations of that for the other achievement badges.

I'm working on adding several new achievements to our set.

I plan on using STags and some jquery to add these to the on-page achievement component. I also created a sidebar on the autoresponder stationary for participants that displays the achievements and other fundraising stats. I posted about that here:

Any tips for making the smaller, 16 x 16 virtual badges look good? These are the ones that appear on the scrolling honor rolls. Last year we uploaded them at the specificed pixel size and format, but something got lost in translation and the  image qualiy  suffered when they were posted.  Any suggestions?

As far as I know Luminate does the resizing itself, so you don’t have much control there. I just took a look at a few of ours, and they are okay but definitely not up to what I could easily do in PS.

This is a guess, but I think the image format might be relevant. Try a PNG or JPG rather than a GIF.

And a last idea is to check out the path of your 16x16 image that is not up to snuff. They all are stored in a directory that you can access via FTP. I bet you could replace those images manually and they would be fine (at least until someone uploads a new version via the GUI and steps on your change.)
