How do you offer free gifts in eCommerce?

Does anyone offer free gifts in their eCommerce store, and, if so, how do you do it? During our membership drives, we offer people who pledge $50 or more on a credit card a choice of several free gifts. For example, a one-year subscription to Newsweek magazine is one of the free gifts we offer. During our September TV membership drive which begins this Saturday, we are offering a free book of recipes from Lidia Bastianich. Because Convio only allows you to associate one free gift (premium) per donation level, we can't do it this way. We also tried giving the product a $0 value with messaging that a donation of $50 or more was required. We thought we figured out a way to make that work, but then someone selected Newsweek as a gift and was able to get through the transaction process without actually making a donation. I don't really see how we could use a discount code either.

Is there something I am overlooking? Any help resolving this issue is much appreciated!

    You could create one "product" for each level where the options change with a configuration option where the user selects the actual gift that he/she would like. You should set the option as one that affects inventory and assign a unique SKU so that it will be easier to track which gift is actually selected.
