Understanding Center, Security Category and User/Admin Group

Options
Hi,

We are considering using Center and would like to know benefit of using it vs simply configuring Security Category and User/Admin Group.

From what I understand from some doc reading and trying:

Security Category can be assigned to various "part" of LO (i.e. donation form, calendar event, campaign, email campaign). This basically "tag" these "parts" as belonging to that security category.

User/Admin Group is also "tagged" with a security category, thereby allowing user/admin (constituent record are assigned into group) to perform the allowed function (permission on group) on these "parts" that's tagged with the same security category.

So one of the functionality of Center is to restrict "admin" of that Center to run email campaign against that Center's constituent. So with a security category and group. We can achieve the same thing by placing an admin in an admin group with the same security category of a bunch of constituent who's in the user group of the same security category?

Is the observation about correct? or i'm totally off the mark?

I'm also not sure what Group Type means.

If there's a much more comprehensive documentation on this, please let me know. Thank you very much in advance.

    Hi Alex,

I'll answer the easiest part of your question first. Group Type is simply categories for groups so that they are easier to find.

Centers are generally used for large organization with multiple satellite offices. Centers not only segment the content and the admins but also the constituents. For example, a constituent in a New York Center would only see New York or General content whereas a constituent in a Maine Center would only see Maine or General content.

Your concept of the way security works with "tagging" content and admin groups is a very good way of explaining it.

Thank you for the confirmation and answer.

    To further understand Center:

Let's say we have 2 "divisions" only. East and West. Our constituent base of say 100K constituents: 60K East and 40K West.

If we want to start without Center, could we have first created:

"East Center" Security Category, and "East Center Member" User Group of Group Type "Center Member Groups" and "East Center Admin" Admin Group of Group Type "Center Administrator Groups" where these 2 groups are Security Category of "East Center". The 60K constituent we have will be "tagged" with "East Center Member" as group.

"West Center" Security Category, and "West Center Member" User Group of Group Type "Center Member Groups" and "West Center Admin" Admin Group of Group Type "Center Administrator Groups" where these 2 groups are Security Category of "West Center". The 40K constituent we have will be "tagged" with "West Center Member" as group.

WHEN and if we feel we would like to use Center. Can we create new Centers and assign the existing security category of "East Center" and "West Center" to the 2 Centers?
