Flagging 1000+ bounced emails as inactive

Options
Hello -

We have RE7 and NXT. We sent an eblast recently and over 1,000 email addresses hard-bounced. We would like to flag these email addresses as inactive. What's the best way to do that?

Does not appear to be an obvious solution via Global Change or Import. Is there a go-to plug-in?

(We do not have Luminate, which as I recall from past RE shops, would be very useful in this situation)

Thanks,

I do this using ImportOmatics. I marked the email as inactive and add a comment of Bounced Email.

This might be a good reason to re-up our IOM subscription... Thanks!

  • Yeah... We struggle with email bounces A LOT.  We use MailChimp and there are a few different plugins out there that claim they will clean up our email addresses.... We've resisted them so far because none of them seem to do everything we need.

When we receive a bounced email that triggers a whole bunch of activity on our end.  Here are some of the things we struggle with:

    1. Is this person the ONLY person with this email address, or is it shared by a spouse (or maybe even a business)... gotta check.

    2. We can make the email inactive, change the type to "Bounced Email" and even put in a quick comment (so we know WHY we made it in active).

    3. But now we might have two other emails for that person.  We have to manually pick the most logical one to make primary and active.

    4. Wait wait... is that bounced email a WORK email?  Why would that bounce?  We will often try to double-check or confirm their employment status as well.

    5. Okay, we don't have another email... should we do two minutes of research to see if we can FIND a new one?  Might be worth it for all the postage we'll save.

We have a few quick queries and automatic processes but they never seem to look at the whole picture so we have found that manually churning through our bounced email on a daily basis has been the "best" solution for us so far.

We have additional problems with MailChimp because it uses Email Address (instead of a user ID) as a primary key.  That's a whole different nightmare....
  • We've used Emma and Constant Contact and when I provide the list to the person sending the email, I ask them to include in the upload to EMMA the Constituent Id, Name, Email Address and Email Address Import Id. When I download the bounce report I get that same data back and I simply add two more columns for Inactive? with the value of YES and Phone Notes where I include the name of the mailing that caused the bounce. Then I use Import to update those email addresses. I use the same process for importing Unsubscribes, but in that case I'll also change the Email Type to Unsubscribed (same as Tom's comments above). My $0.02.
