Customized Unsubscribe/Opt Out Options -- looking for best practices

Hello fellow Online Express users,


Our organization has identified the need to customize the unsubscribe link in our communications.  We've run into several instances where an alumni has previously opted out of a communication from us, but then surprised when they don't receive information about their class reunion.   


Our solution, or so we thought, would be to customize the link when a constituent clicks on the 'unsubscribe' link of the communication to ask them to update their email preferences.  Much like many other emails for other websites who have this option.  That way the constituent can specify if they'd like to only receive event notifications, newsletters or donation appeals or nothing at all.  


I chatted with tech support and apparently this isn't an option as the unsubscribe option is "hard coded" and can't be changed.  


In the age of GDPR (we're based in Europe) this seems like a huge opportunity. 


Curious how other organizations have dealt this this.  Best practices for keeping constituents off the "do not contact" list when they only want to stop receiving donation appeals?  Bonus if it's not a manual update.  


Another approach would be to proactively contact our constituents and ask them to update their email preferences and contact information, but again we understand that this can't be done through Online Express.

    Hi Julie - We include an option to update "Email Preferences" at the bottom of our emails, before the footer.  This link directs to an online form where constituents can let us know how frequently they want to be contacted and what they want to hear about.  It has helped with the number of constituents unsubscribing from all email communications.  While it is a bit more work for us to update constituent records manually, we find it to be beneficial.
