Soft Credit Gifts

Options
Good Morning,

I am wondering how your organization handles soft credit gifts? In the past I've entered the gift in the record of the "owner of the asset" e.g. name on check/credit card and then issued a soft credit to the other donor(s). If the gift is from multiple donors then I split the gift evenly. When the thank you/tax receipt letters are prepared the "owner of the asset" receives the tax receipt and the other donor(s) receive a thank you letter without a tax receipt.

Thank You,

Melissa Mehlum

Sounds similar to our process. Who are your "other donors"? What's their financial stake in the gift? We usually don't split SC gift evenly if we have any info on donors or do not know if it was truly even gifts. That's just how we've chosen to do it as that fits with our SC usage.
  • Thanks JoAnn - the "other donors" are whatever names the donor included with the remittance envelope/note, e.g. I wrote a check for $100 and said the gift was from myself and five other friends. I want to be sure all of those names continued to be entered the way we've been doing it mainly because the majority of our gifts are tribute gifts and I want he tribute's family to know that all of those people gave a gift in memory/honor of their loved one. How do you handle the tax receipt? On a side note I see you're in Rapid City, beautiful location - although I work for a Hospice based out of Florida I work remotely from Madison, SD! smiley
