Same check but split gift and split tax receipt

Options
We have received one check that is a payment towards a pledge, and the donor has requested we split the tax receipt between two constituents.

Can anyone recommend the 'best practice' way of carrying this out?

I'm familiar with split gifts but haven't done any yet, and because this is one gift for one fund and campaign I don't think a split gift is appropriate. Any ideas?

Thanks,

Isabelle

A request for two receipts is not really what split gifts is about.S split gift would be to 2 different funds or campaigns, etc.

And while you can do a thank you to whomever the donor may say, doing tax receipts to anyone other than the person giving the funds can get you in trouble. What are the circumstances that they are making this request?
  • Hi JoAnn,

Thanks for your comment. The gift is from their joint bank account, they are a recently separated couple.
  • So the one check has both their names on it, but they want it split between them because they are divorcing? It sounds like you need to record two seperate gifts under their individual records and record some background info in the gift reference or notes. I would also save any emails/letters you have for this special case just in case you need proof of the donor's request later on.
  • We had a similar incident, we ended up requesting two separate cheques (they had contacted us prior to donating) but since they didn't do that for you I would agree with JoAnn
