Exporting from Greater Giving to Raiser's Edge

Has anyone found an easy way to transfer data from Greater Giving to Raiser's Edge? We use GG for our events (online registration, silent auction purchase, donations, etc) and find it very difficult to get that data into Raiser's Edge.

Are you using the basic import module or are you using a 3rd party plugin? Importacular? ImportOmatic?

  • We also use GG. Basically, you just need to run an export (for sales, I use "SLS-10: Sales Export With Options"), cclean up the export so you are only bringing in data that you need, add any columns that GG doesn't include, and import it into RE. As part of your cleaning process, you will probably need to map constituent IDs to the individual sales. This can be a tedious process, but hopefully you have someone in your org who is comfortable with imports and can play with the process and write up a little SOP to make it work.

I do know that GG is supposed to have export options that are optimized for RE, though I honestly haven't ever looked for that. Maybe contact your GG rep to see if there's a better way to export the data so that the import piece won't take as much setup.

I have not utilized them, but I do know that there is an Imports/Exports section under Reports in GG -- it includes Exports for RE, along with other software, all are labeled/named accordingly

    Basic import.

My colleague has asked -- Is there any way to provide a sample of the import columns layout (headers) you're using? It seemed like there were other important details that RE needed to import the columns.  And does it matter if we are not on the NXT (?) version of RE??

  • I could do that, but we may have different required fields for our gift setup, so it may be that not everything is the same.

  • Oh, and no, it being on NXT or not doesn't make a difference. I'm not on NXT either, but the backend of both when it comes to gift layout are the same.

In the past we have used the “bag of cash” method by just lump summing the event money and using GG as the main driver for receipting donors and only entering paddle raise gifts on the constituent records. I found this to be the easiest way to put gifts in and get RE and GG to match. Although you lose being able to see a constituents complete giving in RE.

This year we decided to add all gifts to RE. I am using a similar method as Ryan, but it is clunky. Leading up to our auction I imported the RE Import IDs to GG. As we receive deposits from GG, I am reconciling against the gifts in GG then importing into RE. Finally I go back into GG and add "RE Posted DD/MM/YYY" to the note field in the gift that have been imported. This way when I run SLS-10 I can see what still needs to go into RE. Our business office likes this as it makes our monthly reconciliation easier to figure out. Unfortunately updating the GG sales has to be done one sale as a time and cannot be updated via import. Our auction was two weeks ago so we are now stumbling through the process and will writeup and SOP when we figure out the best way to do it.

The RE-specific exports from GG can be helpful, but only if you've got ALL existing Constituent IDs entered into GG.  Once you've created the required new Constituents in RE then you need to go back and enter their new Constituent IDs into GG so the Gift information transfers correctly.  There's still a lot of tweaking that has to be done.  No two organizations use RE the same way so any 3rd party solution requires adapting to how your org uses RE.
