Appeal Code Cleanup

I did do some appeal clean up last year.  The biggest question is: are your gifts posted? And will changing appeal have any affect on your financial software/finance reports?  Be sure you know answer to that before changing any records. 


If they are not posted, changing appeal is much easier. You can just edit on the gift record.  Could consider a gift export/import. If you can create an appeal query of specific gifts, you may be able to change by global change.  Don't know if you can add package at the same time.  Haven't tried that move.


If gifts are posted, it requires a manual adjustment made to each record.  At least I couldn't find any short cut to that.  It was time consuming. I worked with one appeal at a time and eventually saw my list getting smaller.  Open each gift record, click adjust, go to split gift tab, change appeal.  And you may want a note on adjustment tab why there is an adjustment as viewing adjustment window does not show what adjustment or why one was made.




My 2 cents...

I did some clean up similar to this last fiscal year - in addition to what JoAnn mentioned, I found it was not possible for me to make adjustments to campaigns/funds/appeals for posted stock-property gift types.

Never bumped up against this particular problem, since all of our appeals have one-year lifespans. We create a new appeal for each year's direct mailing, fundraising event, or acquisition. So if we needed to change something, I would normally just start going forward and make a historical note in the Policies & Procedures log.


Can you not do a gift import/export once the gifts are posted? Surely that would be much easier and less time-consuming in the long run?
