Appeals Tab

Do you track appeals at your organization?  That's what it's for. If you have access to RE training you can take a class about Campaigns, Funds and Appeals that explains it well.

Yes, if you use the appeals tab you can link gifts to them and there are reports in RE that track appeals. You can't track attributes that way.

Ditto what Karen said - appeals is the place to record that info.  Works well with gift entry and reporting.  Only drawback I'm found is that you can not import solicitor assignments to an appeal like you can to a fund/campaign.  Real hole to me in software.  From batch gift entry you don't have the option when it wants to create a solicitor relationship to enter appeal either.
