Foundation Constituent Codes
We are in the process of improving our constituent code list. Right now we have one Foundation code. We have been asked by our gift officer to break out the Foundation code into multiple codes: Foundation - Family, Foundation - Community, Foundation - Corporate. I was wondering what other organizations are doing with regard to flagging Foundation records. I was also curious how others handle coding of records like Schwab Charitible Fund (foundation, DAF or Charitable Fund or something else?
There seems to be some debate here, so I thought i would poll some experts. [:)]

We recently made a similar decision for reporting purposes (although we haven't implemented it yet). These are the constituencies that we decided to use:
- Private Foundation
- Corporate Foundation
- DAF/CF (donor advised funds and community foundations)
We've been pretty careful so far not to get carried away with adding constituencies, but in this case it made sense to us, since we always count giving from those three groups separately. I'd also be curious to hear what other organizations have done.

We have a constituent code for 'foundation'. We use constit code of 'donor advised fund' for orgs like Schwab. At this time we do not differentiate between family/community/corporate foundations because it is not needed for our reporting. If it were, I would certainly consider separating them. That's one of the nice features of RE, each org using it can adapt to meet their needs.

I use "Foundation" for the constituency code and use the Foundation:Private, Foundation:Corporate, Foundation:Community, etc at the Industry Code. Then I can pull a query by all Foundations using the constituency code, or segment on the industry code.

That's an interesting use of the Industry Code. That's a field we've never utilized at our Org - I may think about re-appropriating that.0

I never noticed the "Industry" field before! One of the reasons I love reading the forums. Thanks.

I do use that field for all organizations. It helps to
further segment the data.I also use attributes heavily. It's such an added feature
for a gift, a campaign, a fund, an appeal, a constituent, etc. And
standard reporting allows us to include or exclude attributes.

We do a lot of reporting on Gift Constituency (which, unfortunately, is not an option in Dashboards or canned Reports, or NXT Analyze...they're all based on the Constituent Level Constituent Code; not an option for us). Because of this reporting, we break out Foundations to:
+ Corporate Fndn (counts in the Corporate line of the report)
+ Family Fndn (includes DAFs and counts in the Individual line of the report)
+ Private Fndn (counts in the Foundation line of the report)
+ Fndn Administrator (counts in the Foundation line of the report; this is where the Greater Cincinnati Foundation, Vanguard, Schwab, Fidelity, etc. fall...for those gifts that come from these entities without being part of a DAF--DAFs have their own records)
The Gift Constituency Field is auto-populated with the Constituent's Primary Constituent Code, but allows you to select any other Constituent Code from what is on Bio 2 (and when needed I've added a code, saved the Const Record, selected it on the Gift, and then removed it from Bio 2). But it allows you to select a Constituency per Gift rather than only per Constituent. This way, we can very easily compare board giving, employee giving, etc. without having to consider both Gift Dates and Constituency Dates (i.e. we can compare giving from those who were employees in FY10 to giving from those who were employees in FY16, even if they aren't employees today).

Our Const Code is FOUNDATION. We then use a Const Attribute to further deliniate Fmaily Foudnation, Corp Foundation, etc.0

interesting that everyone is deciding to break the Foundations into parts. I would say that is a good thing, especially if you have a lot of foundations you deal with.
The one that I am not seeing anyone mention is the Matching Gift Foundation. So I would suggest adding that to the list, whether you break foundations into several parts or not. It is much easier to report on Matching gifts if the companies have their own constit code.0 -
You can query on Matching Gift organizations by the
constitutent field: Organization Matches Gifts. That
eliminates duplication in coding.

I'm definitely going to implement this idea. Thank you, this eliminates the need for attributes in some cases.

Can you tell me what “Industry code” you use
for academic foundations e.g. from a higher ed institution? Thanks!

I use Education:Secondary (we speak to many of our local school districts so I track those. I add an attribute of school district and use a table for the school district name. The district administrative offices, school board members fall into one record, then all the schools within that school district have their own record. I can easily pull just the school district offices by the name of the record at the districts that I want to include, etc).
Education: Higher Education for college and universities
You could then add:
Education: Higher Education Foundation
