Team Raiser - Allowing Duplicates to Simplify Registration

Options

We are working on launching a team fundraing platform through TeamRaiser at PETA and have found that without allowing duplicate accounts in Team Raiser, the registration process is not at all user friendly. People who have donated or interacted with our main website previously have a password but aren't aware of it. When they go to register for the TeamRaiser team, it says they already have a password and requires that they go to the forgot password section. Convio's suggestion to handle this is to allow duplicate email records just within the TeamRaiser platform. Has anyone had experience with this? Is this the general way that organizations handle the registration issues? Have there been any problems with duplicates appearing outside of TeamRaiser?

Thanks!

    Michelle,

During your registration flow, does it give you the "New or Returning User" option? Here is a screenshot:

  • Hi Michelle,

I would never say that promoting duplicate creation is a "good" idea - we generally suggest that clients allow duplicate EMAIL addresses to allow families to register, but I would always enforce "same name and email" duplicate rules - that is to say do not allow users to create duplicate records on purpose.

To help people understand that a login is required, I usually recommend a couple of steps:

    1. Enable the returning user login page Kent mentions above, but edit the language on it to say something like "If you receive e-mail from us, you have a log in for our site - click here to have your account information sent to you" or something like that, that jibes with your organizations' security culture.

    2. Send this information in the announcement e-mail when you launch the event.  If it were me, I would send username and pass in every event e-mail, and even build it into the stationery.  Some people are more risk averse; if this is the case, show them their username and provide a link for them to reclaim their password.

So yes, adding TeamRaiser to a site that doesn't traditionally require a login is tricky and new - the best you can do is explain, explain, and explain again in page and email content.

Please let us know if you have further questions!

    Thanks,

    Noel

Hey Kent. How do we include this in our registration setup? I'd love to be able to have this on our site.

    Hi Lisa!

This is in your site options under the F2F_RETURNING_USER_PAGE_ENABLED setting. I've included a screenshot. Just set it to "TRUE" and this step will be entered into your registration process.
