The San José Museum of Art (SJMA) has an exciting opportunity for an Individual Giving Officer to join the Development team to help lead SJMA into its next chapter, re-imagining the Museum for the audience of the future. This enthusiastic, organized, ambitious, light-hearted individual will bring excellent written and verbal communication, sophisticated interpersonal skills, remarkable attention to detail and strong administrative proficiency. This role supports the Development Department and brings a “can-do” attitude.

This position will act as the point person for the Museum’s Patron members and take a lead role in organizing Director’s Council and Council of 100 events and fundraising activities. The Individual Giving Officer will also partner with the Chief Philanthropy Officer and Gala co-chairs to design, implement, and fundraise for the Museum’s annual Gala + Auction.

This is a hybrid position. During onboarding, a temporary need for five days per week on-site will be necessary. After training, the standard on-site requirement is three days per week, with occasional need for overtime or weekend presence, based on events and priorities.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include but are not limited to:

Fundraising

Raise $500,000+ annually by actively managing SJMA's Director’s Council and Council of 100 (C100) fundraising programs and maintaining a dynamic portfolio of donors and prospects capable of giving $5,000+.

Mine the membership and volunteer bases for eligible prospects for the Museum’s patron-level donor groups; develop and execute effective solicitation, upgrade, and retention strategies to grow SJMA’s pipeline for major individual giving.

Partner closely with the Chief Philanthropy Officer to devise personalized proposals and specific strategies, goals, and timetables for successful solicitations.

Personally cultivate and steward donors and prospects via various engagement methods (events, meetings, telephone contact, written communications) in coordination with other key stakeholders.

Events

Act as the staff point person for the Councils Committee and take a lead role in organizing Council events and the Committee’s fundraising activities.

Partner with the Chief Philanthropy Officer and Gala Co-chairs to design, implement, and fundraise for the Museum’s annual Gala + Auction.

Actively participate in Gala fundraising efforts to secure sponsorships, table sales, Auction bids, and paddle-raise pledges from individual donors.

Work with the Chief Philanthropy Officer and Committee members to manage Gala solicitation moves.

Administrative

Partner with department and Museum colleagues to create tailored impact reports based on key SJMA metrics and narratives.

In coordination with the Chief Philanthropy Officer and Membership Manager, plan, write, and craft direct mail appeals, program collateral, and development content for Museum publications.

Attend all Development Committee meetings, prepare income and expense budget projections, and provide regular reports and summaries for our patron-level fundraising programs.

In partnership with the Development Associate, participate in the development of individual giving and prospect plan set up and maintenance in CRM

QUALIFICATIONS:

BA/BS preferred, plus a minimum of three years of individual fundraising with demonstrated success in soliciting and closing five- to six-figure gifts, or equivalent combination of education and experience.

Experience managing and stewarding a portfolio of diverse donors. Demonstrated success aligning stakeholders around a common vision or objective.

Exceptional interpersonal, verbal, and written communication skills; editorial efficiency; ability to synthesize information and compose clear and effective prose.

Highly organized, with a strong work ethic and ability to manage time and priorities independently.

Keen attention to detail and capacity to quickly understand and remember information about donors, museum exhibitions, public programs, and events.

Ability to thrive in a fast paced, challenging, and rewarding environment.

Skill in navigating different personality types among internal and external constituencies.

Ability to function effectively as a team member and a willingness to participate in activities and assignments that help meet the goals of and objectives of the department.

High level of proficiency with Microsoft Office, including Word and Excel; familiarity with Adobe software; CRM experience (working knowledge of Altru or other Blackbaud products, strongly preferred).

Enthusiasm for visual art, education, and community engagement, with a commitment to integrity, kindness, discretion, and personal responsibility.

Knowledge of Bay Area philanthropy preferred.

Valid CA driver’s license required.

Salary Range:

$85,950 – $104,500
