What is the functional difference of creating a "Local Company" or "Sponsor" in TeamRaiser?

Does anyone know the functional difference between creating a "Local Company" or a "Sponsor" in TeamRaiser?  We decided to set up our sponsorship so that only sponsors get a "Company" team page.  In that case, is there really any difference between setting them up as a Sponsor or a Company, and then associating the team to it? 

 

We took a slightly different approach than we possibly should have, where we had our partner hide the company selection drop-down from registration forms to prevent non-sponsors from creating a company team.  We want to manage all company teams in the back end as a service to our sponsors. I'm just having trouble figuring out how to create them in the back end in a way that makes the most sense.

I think the main difference is that Sponsor doesn't have as many fields to fill out as Local Company because the idea is that a sponsor only doesn't have team participating in the event itself so it doesn't need all the internal company volunteer coordination contact information etc. Because of your modification I think setting companies, assuming they have participating employees, as Local Company would be the best choice of the two.

Thanks Ken!  I wasn't sure where to post this, so I appreciate your moving it to the most appropriate spot. 

 

Does it make any difference on the front end if we set up a company or a sponsor without a team? 

 

What reports are different if we use one or the other?  Maybe that's a pretty detailed question, but perhaps there's a Help section or tutorial that I have missed in my searches.
