ANTICIPATED HIRING RANGE: $5,300 - $6,667

CSU CLASSIFICATION SALARY RANGE: $5,022 – $9,083

POSITION PURPOSE:

Under the general direction of the AVP of Development, the Fundraising Specialist and Prospect Researcher guides the work of the volunteer Comprehensive Campaign Committee, coordinates the internal moves management process for the Campaign, performs prospect research and prepares proposals that support the work of the major gift fundraising team.

The Fundraising Specialist and Prospect Researcher serves to direct and support database management, prospect research, moves management tracking, and all operations management regarding Campaign activity. The Specialist will work as a primary member of the Development team, while working closely with all members of University Advancement, and volunteer leaders to support and track the identification, cultivation, solicitation, and stewardship of gifts in support of the campus-wide fundraising effort. This position has responsibility for proactive prospecting, moves management tracking, prospect management, and prospect research as it relates to fundraising initiatives.

The Fundraising Specialist and Prospect Researcher will build, evaluate, maintain and rate a qualified pool of prospects using wealth screening data and other available tools; applies independent judgment to provide analysis of the database and will be responsible for developing processes, policies and best practices, including identification and/or strategic research and analysis of top-tier donor prospects, corporations, foundations and key volunteers in the support of University Advancement.

DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES:

  1. Campaign Coordination
    1. Manage and organize donor/prospective donor tracking system related to Campaign activity.
    2. Independently prepare briefing materials including prospect profiles and proposals for donor meetings.
    3. Develop and evaluate identification, engagement, cultivation and solicitation plans for existing and prospective donors to the Comprehensive Fundraising Campaign referencing policies and practices for guidance.
    4. Interact and exchange ideas with University Advancement staff as a collaborative partner and strategic consultant regarding prospect research and assignment, cultivation and solicitation of potential donors.
    5. Initiate and ensure prompt follow-up on all Campaign activity related to donors, prospective donors, and volunteer leadership team.
    6. Actively participate in & coordinate donor meetings and appointments.
    7. Provide oversight of Campaign volunteer committee and subcommittees and organizing meetings and follow-up.
  2. Prospect Research/Identification
    1. Prepare comprehensive biographical and financial profiles/reports by interpreting and synthesizing large volumes of complex financial and biographic data that inform the strategic development of potential donors.
    2. Provide analysis regarding donor giving patterns and implications using considerable judgement to make recommendations to the Development Team.
    3. Conduct prospect research using standard theories, principles, practices, and techniques through online tools to identify both current and prospective donors.
    4. Perform regular database screening to identify and qualify prospective major gift donors.
    5. Research and prepare prospect profiles utilizing CSUB’s suite of profile templates as requested by major gift fundraisers and as needed to brief the President, Interim Vice President, and major gift fundraisers ahead of donor visits and fundraising events.
    6. Coordinate with the Prospect Lead to build, evaluate, maintain and rate a qualified pool of prospects using wealth screening data and sophisticated research tools.
  3. Major Gift Fundraising Proposal Research and Preparation
    1. Generate database reports and manage campaign and annual gift tracking and analysis for Development staff and Campaign/Foundation Board meetings.
    2. Research donors’ biographical information, philanthropic interests, connections to CSUB, giving history, education, honors, etc., and synthesize the information to prepare major gift proposals as needed to support the work of the fundraising team.
  4. Reporting and Analytics
    1. Plan, organize, and produce reports, brochures, newsletters, and other outreach materials in coordination with Marketing and Communications staff.

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:

EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE – Bachelor’s degree and/or equivalent training and four (4) years of recent (within 3 years) administrative work experience involving study, analysis, and/or evaluation leading to the development or improvement of administrative policies, procedures, practices, or programs. Experience should include supporting the drafting of proposals for existing and prospective donors.

LICENSES – Possession of a valid driver’s license or the ability to obtain by date of hire.

SKILLS, KNOWLEDGE & ABILITIES (SKA’s) –

  • Regular and reliable attendance is required.
  • Ability to oversee the moves management process for major gift donors and prospective donors.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of biographical and financial reference sources and ability to gather information effectively from a variety of resources.
  • Ability to compile, write, and present reports related to prospect research findings.
  • Thorough knowledge of and ability to apply extensive expertise to complex programs and/or administrative specialties, including pertinent laws and regulations.
  • Demonstrated expertise in and advanced knowledge of the principles, problems, and methods of public and business administration and operational and fiscal management.
  • Expertise in administrative survey techniques, operations and systems analysis, statistical and research methods, and the ability to interpret and evaluate results to develop sound conclusions and recommend new or revised policies.
  • Ability to understand problems from a broad, interactive perspective and discern applicable underlying principles to conceive of and develop strategic solutions.
  • Ability to work with representatives from public and private entities and handle potentially sensitive situations.
  • Demonstrated consultative skills in working with internal and external constituent groups.
  • Ability to effectively present ideas and concepts in written or presentation format and use consultative and facilitation skills to gain consensus.
  • Demonstrated customer service experience requiring a very high level of diplomacy and professionalism.

  • Excellent computer skills and competence with a variety of computer applications including word-processing, spreadsheets, databases, on-line systems, Internet as well as online calendaring and email.
  • Working knowledge of or ability to quickly learn University infrastructure.
  • Must be willing to travel and attend training programs off-site for occasional professional development.
  • Must be able to work occasional holidays and adjust working hours to meet special jobs. May be called back periodically to perform work as needed on an emergency basis.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Five or more years’ experience within a higher education institution’s university advancement setting.
  • Demonstrated skills in an institutional / educational environment utilizing a customer-oriented and service-centered attitude.
  • Extensive experience in Raiser’s Edge donor management software.
  • Successful experience working with high profile volunteer leadership and senior executives.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS: SEDENTARY WORK – involves mainly sitting; minimal walking and standing; lifting light weight objects limited to 15 pounds.
