Ducks Unlimited, Inc., the continent’s leader in waterfowl and wetlands conservation, seeks a Director of Prospect Development to oversee the prospect research and prospect management unit of the Development office. The Director of Prospect Development provides leadership to the Prospect Research Analysts, is responsible for directing prospect identification, research, management and donor analytics to assist with Ducks Unlimited’s fundraising and engagement priorities. The Director is responsible for ensuring that the research needed is accurate, comprehensive and timely.

Responsibilities:

  • Provide direction for and oversee the prospect research program; determine research strategies and manage the production and distribution of research reports needed for prospect identification, cultivation and solicitations.
  • Update, revise and keep current all prospect development policy documentation.
  • Conduct regular review of fundraising portfolios to ensure all portfolio numbers are in-line with policy guidelines.
  • Lead wealth screening and predictive modeling project. Utilize data from these programs to identify new prospects.
  • Serve as main contact for vendors related to modeling/wealth screening and other prospect research tools and resources.
  • Work with Senior Director of Development Operations to develop reporting and analytics dashboard for prospect development team, field fundraisers and managers.
  • Serve as a subject matter expert on prospect research practices and tools, including attending relevant conferences and trainings, and hold membership in appropriate organizations.
  • Undertake financial analysis of prospects' and donors' known wealth indicators to assess potential philanthropic capacity.
  • Hire, train and supervise the Prospect Development team; provide structured evaluation of progress while promoting professional growth opportunities for staff.
  • Work alongside the Managing Director to plan and implement annual Prospect Development meetings with Major Gift fundraising staff to set fiscal year goals and recalibrate portfolios.
  • Serve as primary researcher for Senior Leadership Team and volunteer leadership requests.
  • Strategize and partner with development staff to support the development of high-capacity portfolios.
  • Plan/Set measurable goals for and execute the identification and qualification of new major gift prospects.
  • Develop supportive and productive relationships with development staff and other DU staff involved in fundraising.
  • Use the database to track research activity for internal prospect research metrics.
  • Safeguard the confidentiality of constituent information at all times by adhering to ethical and confidentiality guidelines of DU and APRA, the professional organization for prospect research professionals.
  • Perform additional duties as assigned.

Qualifications

Experience and Education: Bachelor’s degree from accredited university or college; minimum of ten years of fundraising, non-profit administration and solicitation experience. The ideal candidate will have a minimum of two years of related experience in prospect research or related role, preferably in a fundraising environment.

Communication Skills: Excellent communications, writing, and presentation skills.

Technological Proficiency: Demonstrated skill and knowledge of, or ability to learn quickly, technological tools available to DU, including Blackbaud CRM, PowerBI, Microsoft Windows computer environment, and Microsoft Office suite (Outlook, Word, Excel, and PowerPoint required). Familiarity with Internet search strategies and experience using, or ability to learn quickly, electronic databases and online search tools such as Lexis for Development Professionals, WealthEngine, Morningstar Intelligize, GuideStar, Hoovers, Foundation Center, etc.

Interpersonal Skills: Detail-oriented, self-motivated, exceptional organizational skills, and ability to work independently as well as in a team environment. Commitment to the mission and goals of Ducks Unlimited.

Management and Leadership Skills: Proven ability to effectively supervise employees (both in-office and remote). Demonstrated skills to retrieve, manipulate, analyze and synthesize information gathered from a variety of sources (electronic, print, and personal accounts). High attention to detail and follow-up, and excellent organizational skills required – including the ability to prioritize and multi-task several projects simultaneously. An aptitude for critical thinking and problem solving. Ability to manage confidential information with discretion and tact.

Reporting and Location: This position reports to the National Director of Advancement and works from the national headquarters in Memphis, TN. Candidates must be willing to work hours that extend outside of the typical workday and workweek throughout the year. Overnight travel is required.
