Luminate Online Enablement: Be Compliant with New Mastercard Recurring Gift Requirements

Mastercard has advised organizations that accept recurring gifts must now provide additional details to help their donors cancel those recurring gifts if they choose. The new requirements have been implemented to help merchants reduce potential chargebacks and provide a more positive experience for card holders.

Customers that process payments through Blackbaud Merchant Services with recurring payment method of credit card that include Mastercard transactions, will need to provide the following (where available) to their constituents in order to comply with the new recurring billing requirements:

  • Edit any receipts to donors or constituents to include verbiage on how to cancel recurring payments including a phone number or instructions (i.e. For more information on your recurring payment, including how to cancel, click here.)
  • A location on the organization's website must explain what a donor or constituent has to do to cancel a recurring or sustaining gift (i.e. call a number, fill out an electronic form, etc.)

    There is just one thing I am not sure I understood correctly: will the possibility for donors to opt-out of the notification emails be ready by March 2023?

  • @Kent Gilliam You mentioned about the ability to report on autoresponders. To avoid our monthly donors getting too many extra emails, we're thinking of including our special monthly donor newsletter within the body of the sustaining receipt autoresponder (via reusables) by the March deadline, but I think that will mean we'll lose our ability to report on the stats AND make it complicated to export the email recipients via .csv so we can import to RE NXT for actions. Is this in the dev queue?
